WHY IS A FIRE CURTAIN IMPORTANT?
A fire needs heat, fuel, and oxygen to burn and spread. If a fire starts in an open space, there’s likely to be an abundance of the latter of the three requirements, and as such the spreading of the fire can happen at a great pace.
This is where an effective fire curtain comes in to play. It serves to divide open areas in to smaller, contained areas – or compartments – and as such limits the spread of the fire.
This not only protects the property from potentially costly, extensive fire damage, but can also give occupants extra time to vacate the premises, protect escape routes, and allow extra time for firefighters to arrive.
TYPES OF FIRE CURTAIN
There are several different types of fire curtain, each providing a solution suited to its particular environment.
- Fixed Smoke Fire Curtains – As the name suggests, a fixed fire curtain sits permanently in place providing compartmentalisation in situ. This type of fire curtain is particularly effective in large open spaces, such as commercial warehouses.
- Automatic Smoke Fire Curtains – An automatic fire curtain is the most widely-utilised type of fire curtain. They make the most of one of the key features of a fire curtain – namely its ability to roll up and store discreetly within a building’s structure, to be deployed when required. An automatic fire curtain will be linked to our clients’ fire alarm system, and will be deployed when a fire is detected in that zone. This allows for effective fire management and is an essential element in most large-scale commercial fire protection systems.
